After the winter period the gravel area’s need a rigorous tidy-up. Rather then duplicating these activities I will point you to last years activity. Some of the aspects we need to take care of are :
- Algae an mosses growing on and in the gravel.
This may involve just raking, but can also require spraying either with clear water or with chemicals, vinegar or whatever may remove algae.See the Maintenance-hint in: Scrubbing the veranda deck to remove alga and moss. - Patterns in the gravel are damaged or have disappeared as a whole.
See: Raking the Ginshanada, flat and level. - Flat and level area’s will no longer be just that.
See: Raking the Ginshanada, flat and level. - Weeds, in particular grasses have populated the gravel area and need to be removed.
This is a time consuming manual job after whisch raking is required. For an example see Maintaining ‘the five Islands of immortality’ gravel ‘sea’ - Debris on and in the gravel. Leafs, needles, droppings, and what ever can pollute the gravel surface. This is mostly combined with the previous item.
- Creeping groundcovers have started to take over, i.e. overgrow, the gravel surface. A measure to prevent this from happening was already taken in the last few weeks. See my post: The Ginshanada and Island edges, a coastline.
